Helen’s Story of Finding Comfort and Connection at Longbridge Deverill

When Helen joined us at Longbridge Deverill Care Home in September 2025, she was seeking nursing care to help manage her multiple sclerosis (MS). Having previously lived in a residential setting, Helen found herself missing the sense of social connection and interaction she had always enjoyed as a former pub manager. With reduced mobility and increasing pain, life had become more challenging, and her family wanted a supportive environment where she could receive expert care while rediscovering her confidence and independence.
Our team worked closely with Helen and her loved ones from the moment she moved in to ensure her transition was smooth and that we created a care plan that reflected her goals, preferences and needs.
Building Confidence Through Personalised Care
Over the months following her arrival, our entire team got to know Helen and helped her settle into life at Longbridge Deverill by ensuring each day brought comfort, purpose and something to look forward to. One of the key steps in supporting Helen was connecting her with our local MS Therapy Centre. Our Activities Coordinator coordinated with the occupational therapists to arrange regular appointments for Helen. After every session, she returned feeling more relaxed and noticeably brighter. Mary, Helen’s key worker, shared, “Helen looks more comfortable in her chair after every session and has a renewed sense of self. It is a pleasure to see.”. She also takes great comfort in receiving holistic therapies such as massages from our team, as they have helped her manage discomfort and improve sleep.
Our team also recognised Helen’s lifelong love of gardening so they sourced topsoil and adapted our garden areas so she could continue to enjoy this hobby safely. Being able to get her hands back in the soil, watch new plants grow and spend time outdoors made a visible difference to her mood and well-being. In just three months, Helen became more comfortable and chatty with residents and staff, often sharing stories from her days running a pub and making others laugh with her humour and warmth.
To further enhance Helen’s independence, her physiotherapist referred her to the Wiltshire Wheelchair Service, which is now supporting her with wheelchair and equipment adjustments to improve comfort and mobility. Helen’s sessions with the MS physiotherapy team now take place every other week, and she is exploring oxygen therapy as an additional way to support her well-being. Knowing that her mum and two daughters remain closely involved and regularly updated gives Helen great reassurance and motivation as she continues her journey toward feeling her best each day.
